A considerable number of the world’s most renowned singers and composers come from the LGBTQ+ community. Music fans are taking their playlists up by including bands and performers representing diverse walks of life. Yvonne Doll, a lesbian musician, is one such powerhouse whose impressive vocal talent, combined with her distinct guitar styling, truly makes her stand out from the crowd!
Yvonne grew up in Cincinnati, OH, but went to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Brimming with artistic talent, Yvonne is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (B.F.A.) and has been an active member of the Fulton Street Collective for over 15 years. She is also the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for indie rock band ‘The Locals’.
As an accomplished abstract oil painter, Yvonne’s approach to painting is heavily influenced by music. What music she listens to at a painting’s inception significantly impacts the final product, whether it’s Sonic Youth or Zoe Keating. Her paintings are abstract but approachable, and she has a devoted following of collectors.
In addition to being a creative artist, she is also a talented singer. She and her band, The Locals, have been playing in Chicago’s music scene for over a decade. The band has performed at various famous venues and festivals across the United States, such as Summerfest, YouBloom, Dewey Beach PopFest, MidPoint Music Festival, and South by Southwest.
Yvonne is also an exceptional photographer; her project, SleepyUrbanite.com, received international fame, showcasing images of individuals sleeping on the train. It was featured on The Today Show, NBC News Chicago, The Red Eye, Gapersblock, VOXPOP Magazine (Paris), and Newstalk Radio (Ireland).
However, her raw art from her cell phone sparked debate, highlighting the dangers of rapidly evolving cell phone technology. It was covered in law curricula across the United States, and she even had law students call her for interviews for papers on privacy laws they were drafting.
Today, Yvonne stands proudly as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, hoping to inspire, connect and delight people across the globe with her music and art. Her artwork and music have a deep connection with the immutable wonder of human existence, leaving behind a deep impact on the viewers and listeners.
So, if you need some hooky, 90’s inspired alt-rock for your next playlist, The Locals (with Yvonne Doll) is one of the bands you should not miss out on.
